The URLs for national and international institutions that provide further information on electric and magnetic fields at 50 Hz are listed below.

International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)

This independent international institution, formally recognised by the World Health Organization, evaluates scientific results of research on non-ionising radiation throughout the world. Based on the available scientific evidence, in 1998 the ICNIRP published a recommendation guide to limit the exposure to electromagnetic fields in the 0 Hz to 300 GHz frequency range. In addition, the ICNIRP performs an annual revision of the new results in scientific research for the purpose of modifying the recommended limits of exposure, if necessary. To date, this has not been the case. In addition, the European Union used this guide as the basis for its recommendations.

World Health Organisation (WHO)

As part of its mandate to protect public health and in response to public concern regarding the effects on health of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), in 1996 the World Health Organization created the International EMF Project to evaluate scientific evidence of the effects on health of EMF in the 0 to 300 GHz range. Its web page includes news, reports, press releases, congress announcements and information on the development of the project.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (Programa RAPID), United States

A federal agency committed to the study of health problems associated with the environment. This agency is responsible for managing the RAPID programme (Research and Public Information Dissemination) sponsored by the US Government, that investigates industrial frequency electric and magnetic fields. The web page includes general information, the progress made by the programme and reports on the development of programme activities.

Health Protection Agency (HPA), United Kingdom

This agency is an advisory institution to the British Department of Health. The website includes a section on electromagnetic fields of various frequencies and recommendations for maximum limits of exposure (these recommendations match those stated by the ICNIRP).

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

This international institution is dependent on the World Health Organization and is responsible for the coordination and management of research regarding causes of cancer, the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and the development of strategies to control the disease.

Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, Spain

In 2001, after conclusions were reached by a committee of independent experts set up for that purpose, the recommendations of the European Union were transposed into Spanish legislation.
