Energy Efficiency

The losses generated during energy distribution result in the waste of part of the energy generated at the plants and contribute to our planet's global warming.

This, together with the improved performance of the networks, is one of the reasons why loss reduction in the network during electricity distribution and represents a large part of Iberdrola Distribución Eléctrica's investment effort.

In 2017, losses reached 6.65% of the total energy distributed through Iberdrola Electricity Distribution's grid. Electricity grid improvement plans are drawn up every year in order to reduce energy losses from the grid.

These plans include various areas of activity in order to improve the system and customer management, thus reducing losses. They include:

  • Reduced length of power lines between the electric power sources and the supply points, by building new substations and carrying out large power expansions in some existing substations.
  • Construction of new power lines and reconfiguration of distribution lines.
  • Voltage rise.
  • Improvement of the power factor, increasing the number of capacitor banks and, therefore, capacity (MVAr).
  • Installation of high-efficiency transformers.
  • Maintenance work in networks and substations: cable, crosspiece and pylon replacement, cleaning of power line corridors, fire risk analysis, thermography, helicopter inspections, etc.
  • Progress in the implementation of remote management in supplies with high-and-low-voltage metering.
  • Supply point inspection and improved contract management.
