Waste

In the course of its work, Iberdrola Distribución Eléctrica generates waste, owing mostly to the renovation of old equipment and the building of new installations.

The waste generated is managed based on its type and in strict compliance with the applicable legislation.

Treatment is carried out based on the type of waste:

  • Non-hazardous waste: managers authorised to treat these materials collect the waste at our installations. This type of waste includes: cables (copper, aluminium, aluminium-steel, fibre optic), pipes, brass, meters, mains isolators, relays and measurement equipment, clean iron, glass and porcelain insulators, wooden poles, wooden spools, concrete poles, as well as the packing and containers they are (or have been) kept in.
  • Hazardous waste: the broad geographical distribution of the units in Iberdrola Distribución Eléctrica, and the difficulty this might entail, has been addressed by implementing several strategically distributed hazardous waste management centres. These centres collect all these surplus materials originated in the installations, assess their possible reuse, and if necessary manage them together as hazardous waste. This procedure ensures recycling of all the materials which offer the possibility of reuse, and management of hazardous waste by highly specialised personnel by highly specialized personnel, always in strict compliance with the applicable legislation. This type of waste includes: oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), used dielectric oil, transformers contaminated with PCB, PCB transformers and capacitors, oil capacitors, Ni-Cd batteries, lead batteries, soil contaminated with hazardous substances, material impregnated with pollutants (rags, paper and absorbent material impregnated with oil or other pollutants, remains of paint and varnish, cans, aerosols, etc).
